4-H Older Youth and Awards

Lincoln County 4-H provides offers many opportunites for older youth to grow in citizenship and leadership.   The youth can be recognized with two awards -- the Key Award and the "I Dare You" Award.   Lincoln County 4-H also sponsers several trips:  U.S. Space Camp, American Spirit Leadership Program, the Wisconsin 4-H and Youth Confrence, Citizenship Washington Focus, National 4-H Conference, and National 4-H CongressThe Lincoln County 4-H Leaders’ Association, Inc. provides a 50% scholarship to all youth who are selected for these trips. The estimated cost reflects the amount that the youth selected is responsible to pay.

Your completed application is due to the UW-Extension office by Monday, September 8th, 2008.  A committee will make selections by October 17th and you will be notified following selection.

Application

The application, along with the interview, is the basis for selection for all older youth awards and trips.  Please be sure to complete each section of the form completely.  Be certain to read each section and answer them completely.  If you have no information to include for a section, be sure to indicate this on your form.  A portion of the selection for awards and trips is based on your completed application, so the more information you provide the more the selection committee has to base their selections on.

In addition, members are able to participate in International Opportunities as 4-H representatives on trips to foreign countries or by the 4-H member's family hosting a youth form another country.  These opportunities allow 4-H members experience other cultures as well as providing a better understanding of their own culture.

Key Award

Part of the Older Youth Trips and Awards program, the Key Award is open to any 4-H member, grade 9 and above.  Applicants will compete against the best, as the Key Award is the highest state award a 4-H member can receive. The Wisconsin 4-H Key Award is to provide special recognition to 4-H members who have shown consistent growth in their 4-H program, and who have developed their leadership ability and life skills.  The awards are presented at the following year’s annual recognition banquet in November. 


"I Dare You" Award

Part of the Older Youth Trips and Awards Program, the "I Dare You" Award is open to any 4-H member, age 14 - 16.  This award is given in recognition of personal integrity, balanced living and potential leadership. The “I Dare You” Leadership Award is made available each year by the American Youth Foundation. William H. Danforth, founder of Ralston Purina Company in St. Louis, who dared young people to achieve their highest potential and to influence others through lives of service, first offered the award in 1941. The award takes its name from the book, “I Dare You”, written by Mr. Danforth, in which he commends the balanced life of mental, physical, social and spiritual development as the backbone of leadership. The awards are presented at this year’s annual recognition banquet in November.

U.S. Space Camp

Delegates participate in hands-on mock space missions and other activities in this NASA program while exchanging ideas with youth from across the country. Camp takes place in Huntsville, Alabama, in April of each year.

      Open to Grades 6-8
      Estimated cost is about $250 (total cost of about $490.

Wisconsin 4-H and Youth Confrence

Approximately 800 youth attend this educational event in Madison each summer in June. Participants take part in educational seminars and assemblies and meet people from across Wisconsin. They are encouraged to take what they learn and share it with others in their home community.

     Open to Grades 8 - 10

     Estimated cost is $110 (total cost is about $220).

 

American Spirit Leadership Program

The American Spirit Leadership Program is a wonderful opportunity developed to introduce 4-H youth to America’s heritage, citizenship, and leadership. The program has the following objectives for its participants: increase appreciation and understanding of America’s Heritage; build awareness of the many steps taken to gain U.S. independence and freedom, further develop skills in leadership and personal expression of values, and increase awareness of self in relationship to other group members as well as their communities and 4-H programs. Featured sites include: Valley Forge, Philadelphia, New York, Statue of Liberty. Plymouth, Boston, Whale Watching in Gloucester, and Salem.  It takes place in June.

     Open to Grades 7 - 9

     Estimated cost is $475 (total cost is about $950)

       -- includes most meals, transportation and lodging.

 

Citizenship Washington Focus

Over 200 Wisconsin 4-H youth are selected to attend this leadership program held at the National 4-H Center in Washington DC, sometime in June or July. Participants learn the importance of civic and social responsibilities as they relate to the development of better citizens and leaders. The week consists of participatory workshops, speakers, committee work, field trips and social events. Citizenship Washington Focus is the experience of a lifetime. And now is the right time for you.

     Open to Grades 10 – 12 (minimum age 15 during trip)

     Your estimated cost is $490 (total cost is about $980).

 

National 4-H Conference

Six (6) youth from Wisconsin are selected to attend this working conference held at the National 4-H Center in Washington DC in April. Each participant selects an issue (i.e., education, promotion, environment, violence) and works with other youth from across the country to develop plans to help direct future 4-H programming. Delegates spend the majority of time contributing to stimulating, task-oriented groups. One day is spent on Capital Hill meeting with legislators and touring.

National 4-H Congress

As a delegate to the National 4-H Congress held in November, the youth will participate in self-development seminars, tours, and a service project, while exchanging ideas with youth from across the country.
